Vallugola Bay is one of the few points on the Italian Adriatic coast where you can see both sunrise and sunset over the sea from the same place. The condition, anomalous given the geography of the Adriatic side, comes from the shape of the Monte San Bartolo promontory, which locally alters the exposure.

For those seeking moments of landscape photography or just contemplation, the bay and the ridge offer two distinct appointments in the same day, each with its own light, colour and atmosphere.

At a glance

  • Sunrise over the sea: from Vallugola beach, the harbour and the breakwater
  • Sunset: from the ridge belvederes (Gabicce Monte, Casteldimezzo, Montagnola)
  • Best season for sunsets: autumn (September-November)
  • Best season for sunrises: summer, for convenient times
  • Most colourful period at sunset: autumn and winter

Where to see the sunrise

Sunrise at Vallugola appears over open sea, to the north-east of the beach. The bay faces precisely that direction and has no orographic obstacles between the shore and the horizon.

The best spots:

  • Vallugola beach. Frontal position to the sea. It is the main reference for photographing sunrise over water.
  • The harbour and the breakwater. Same exposure, with the breakwater and the boats in the composition.
  • The side cliffs of the bay. Perspectives with the cliff in the foreground and the horizon behind.

When it happens. In summer the sun rises around 5:15-5:30: an early alarm but pleasant temperatures. In autumn and spring it rises around 6:30-7:00, more convenient times. In winter it rises between 7:30 and 8:00, with skies often particularly clear after tramontana winds.

Where to see the sunset

Sunset at Vallugola does not happen over the sea: the sun sets behind the ridge of the park, behind the bay. For this reason the best sunset spots are on the heights, on the ridge, with a frontal westward view.

Belvedere of Gabicce Monte

At 150 metres above sea level, it is the most popular sunset spot in the area. Frontal view westwards with the Romagna Riviera in the foreground and the inland hills behind. It is reached by car from Gabicce Mare in a few minutes and has panoramic restaurants for dinner.

Belvedere of Casteldimezzo

At 200 metres above sea level, it offers a view of the full curve of the coast with the sun dropping over the Montefeltro inland. Less crowded than Gabicce Monte, with its panoramic restaurants inside the medieval village.

Montagnola (SP 44)

At 196 metres along the SP 44 Panoramica, the summit plateau known as the "Roof of the World" is one of the widest viewpoints in the park. A stop along the panoramic road, ideal for those riding or driving the SP 44.

Belvedere of Fiorenzuola di Focara

A less frontal position relative to the sunset, but significant for the combination of the medieval village and the coastal landscape. Suited to those already in the village for other reasons.

The light in the bay during the day

The shape of the bay (closed to the east, south and west by the cliff, open to the north-east) creates specific light conditions:

Morning (sunrise-11). Frontal or slightly side-lit sun. Direct light, water clarity at its highest.

Central hours (11-15). High sun, saturated light, strong contrast. The hottest hours on the beach.

Afternoon (15-18). The sun starts to descend. The bay passes progressively into the shade of the cliff behind.

Late afternoon to sunset. The bay is in full shade of the cliff, with diffuse, cool light. The sun continues to light the open sea and the sky. A good moment for those seeking quiet on the beach but not for those seeking direct sun.

Practical consequence: for sunbathing on Vallugola beach, the best moments are morning and the first part of the afternoon. For late afternoon in the sun, it is best to move to Gabicce Mare, which stays exposed longer.

The sunset seasons

Autumn (September-November). The best season. Clearer skies, lower humidity, cloud passages that generate intense colour. Pleasant temperatures for sitting at the viewpoints.

Winter (December-February). Short but very colourful sunsets. Particularly clean skies after tramontana winds.

Spring (March-May). Pleasant sunsets, intermediate quality. In May the broom in flower adds a chromatic component to the landscape.

Summer (June-August). Regular but generally less colourful sunsets, due to higher humidity. The evenings after afternoon thunderstorms are the most favourable.

Practical tips for photography

Tripod: useful for the blue hour (the blue-violet light before sunrise and after sunset), when exposure times lengthen.

Time planning: the astronomical planning apps (PhotoPills, The Photographer's Ephemeris, Sun Surveyor) let you calculate in advance the direction of the sun at sunrise and sunset on any given day, and choose the best shooting point for each season.

Seasonal shift: at the equinox (21 March, 23 September) the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. At the summer solstice the direction shifts northward; at the winter solstice southward. Knowing this shift helps in planning compositions.

How long the good light lasts. The golden hour before sunset and after sunrise lasts 30-50 minutes depending on the season (longer in summer). The blue hour lasts 20-30 minutes.

Planning a day of light

A suggested sequence for those wanting sunrise + sunset in a day:

  • Sunrise on Vallugola beach. Early alarm, tripod on the beach or breakwater
  • Breakfast at the harbour after 7:30, at one of the bars that open early
  • Morning on the beach or snorkelling with the best light on the water
  • Lunch at the harbour restaurants
  • Afternoon on the paths or in the ridge villages (Casteldimezzo, Fiorenzuola)
  • Sunset from the Gabicce Monte belvedere or the Montagnola
  • Dinner at the panoramic restaurants of Gabicce Monte or Casteldimezzo

About sunsets and sunrises at vallugola

Can you see both sunrise and sunset from Vallugola?

Where do you see the best sunset?

The belvedere of Gabicce Monte is the busiest spot, with a frontal westward view. Casteldimezzo (200 m above sea level) and the Montagnola (196 m along the SP 44) also offer excellent perspectives.

What is the best season for sunsets?

Autumn, from September to November. Clear skies alternating with cloud passages, very high light quality, pleasant temperatures for sitting at the viewpoints. Winter also offers intense sunsets.

What times does the sun rise and set?

Can you see the Ravenna lighthouse from Vallugola?

On exceptionally clear days, particularly after tramontana winds in autumn and winter, the ridge belvederes show the lighthouse of Ravenna on the horizon, around 80 km away as the crow flies. A rare condition.
