A wild cove below a Dantean village

The beach of Fiorenzuola di Focara is a pebble cove below the medieval Dantean village of Fiorenzuola, a hamlet of the municipality of Pesaro inside the Monte San Bartolo Nature Park. In 2019 the Guardian included it among Europe's 40 most beautiful beaches.

Unlike Vallugola and Gabicce Mare, it has no lido and no services: a wild free beach, to be approached with the right preparation. It is reached only on foot from the village, on a steep path, or by the summer shuttle in July and August.

A beach with no services: what that means

On the beach of Fiorenzuola there is nothing: no umbrellas, no showers, no toilets, no bar, no lifeguards. It is the price (and the value) of its landscape quality.

It is to be approached with preparation:

  • Drinking water in quantity sufficient for the stay, plus a reserve for the climb back
  • Light food for the hours of rest
  • High-protection sunscreen and a hat
  • Rubbish bags: take home everything you bring to the beach
  • Reef shoes for the pebbles
  • Large towel preferable to mats on the pebbles

The natural shade of the cliff arrives only in the late afternoon. In the central hours you are in full sun.

How to get to the beach

From the village on foot (Sentiero dell'Amore)

Pedestrian access from the village follows a steep alley known locally as the Sentiero dell'Amore.

  • Elevation: 177 metres
  • Time down: 20-30 minutes
  • Time up: 40-60 minutes
  • Surface: unpaved, slippery after rain
  • Footwear: light walking shoes or sports shoes with rubber sole. Flip-flops are not suitable

The climb back roughly doubles the time of the descent: factor this in especially in the hot hours, and carry enough water.

In July and August a shuttle service runs from the village to the beach, avoiding the elevation on foot. Frequencies and times vary with the period: check with the tourist office or local info points.

In low season (September-June) the shuttle is not active and access is only on foot.

By car from the SP 44

Park at the entrance to the village of Fiorenzuola di Focara, along the SP 44 Panoramica. From there continue on foot through the village to the start of the Sentiero dell'Amore. In July and August the shuttle leaves from the same area.

From Vallugola

On foot via paths 151d, 151 and 155, about 90-120 minutes, with significant total elevation. By car, along the SP 44 Panoramica, about 15 minutes.

Snorkelling and swimming

Clear sea at Fiorenzuola di Focara

The sides of the bay, where the cliff enters the water directly, are suited to snorkelling. Water clarity is high in the absence of significant river inputs, and the best conditions are found after a few days of calm sea.

For standard swimming the common warnings of the park's pebble beaches apply:

  • The seabed drops fast: 2-3 metres depth within a few metres of the shore
  • There is no lifeguard: responsibility is the bather's
  • The beach's isolation limits intervention in case of need

For these reasons the beach is not a suitable choice for small children, nor for inexperienced swimmers. Vallugola and Gabicce Mare are more suitable for family use.

When to go

High season (July-August). The only period with the active shuttle, a condition that makes access easier for those who do not want or cannot tackle the 177 metres of elevation. Numbers grow but stay governed by the difficulty of access.

Shoulder season (May, June, September, October). No shuttle, foot access only. Very low numbers, generally calm sea. The best period for those seeking isolation.

Best times. Early morning for frontal light on the beach and for the climb back at cooler temperatures. Late afternoon for the natural shade of the cliff.
