A pebble bay reachable by car right down to the shore

Vallugola beach is around 5 minutes by car from Gabicce Mare, enclosed by the cliffs of the Monte San Bartolo Park. It is a pebble and gravel bay around 300 metres long, with clear water, a small marina behind the beach and a car park right on the sea.

Unlike the other coves of the San Bartolo Park, here you drive right down to a few steps from the shore, with no descent path to tackle. For this reason it is the busiest beach on the park's Adriatic side.

Free beach or lido?

Free beach

Part of the beach is free of charge, accessible directly from the harbour square. Suited to those bringing their own umbrella and gear.

On the free stretch there are no showers or services on the sand, but the public toilets at the harbour are a few metres away. On weekends in July and August it fills up in the central hours: arriving by 9:30 is the best way to find a spot.

Equipped lido

The lido offers:

  • Umbrellas and sun loungers for hire (daily, weekly, seasonal)
  • Showers and toilets for guests
  • Bar and refreshments on the beach
  • Natural shaded areas below the cliff

On summer weekends, booking the lido ahead is advised.

What services are there in the bay?

Everything within a few minutes' walk from the beach:

  • Public toilets at the harbour
  • Bars and restaurants on the harbour square
  • Boat and dinghy hire from the marina
  • Seasonal information point
  • Litter bins and recycling

For seafront lunches and dinners see the Vallugola restaurants page.

What to bring to the beach?

Vallugola is not a sandy beach. Useful kit:

  • Reef shoes, both for walking on the pebbles and for entering the water
  • Mask and snorkel for snorkelling along the sides of the bay
  • Large towel preferable to mats, which slide on the pebbles
  • Plenty of water, especially in the central hours
  • Sunscreen: the natural shade of the cliff only arrives in the late afternoon

Is it good for children?

Children playing on Vallugola beach

The bay is sheltered, with services nearby and clear water: conditions that suit families. Three warnings:

  • The seabed drops fast: 2-3 metres depth within a few metres of the shore. For the youngest, arm bands and constant supervision are recommended.
  • Pebbles make barefoot walking uncomfortable. Reef shoes advised for the whole family.
  • On the equipped stretch there is a lifeguard in high season. On the free stretch supervision is reduced.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs on a lead are allowed on the free beach stretch, with the duty to clean up.

At the lido, dogs' entry depends on the lido's policy: best to check in advance.

On the harbour square there are shaded areas and water points useful for dogs in the hottest hours.

Is it accessible for people with motor disabilities?

The harbour square and pedestrian routes to the beach are flat, with ramps at the main junctions. They are wheelchair-accessible.

Entering the water from the pebble beach is the most demanding part: there are no permanent platforms along the whole shore. The lido can provide dedicated assistance on request. Contacting them in advance to plan the day is advised.

Accessible toilets are available at the harbour.

How to get to Vallugola beach?

By car

From Gabicce Mare or from Pesaro follow the SP 44 Panoramica Adriatica to the "Vallugola" sign, then take the Strada della Vallugola downhill. It is about 900 metres of bends to the car park next to the harbour and the beach.

The road is narrow and steep, with few passing places. Drive with care, especially in high season and when crossing cyclists or pedestrians coming up.

On foot from the Panoramica

When the lower car park is full, the most practical alternative is to leave the car in a layby along the SP 44 and walk down via path 151d of the San Bartolo Park: 900 metres of surfaced path, 150 metres of elevation, about 20 minutes down and 30 up.

On the way back up it is best to set out before the hottest hours or after 17:00, especially with children.

By boat

The Vallugola marina has visiting moorings. From the quay the beach is a few metres away.

For the full details on motorways, trains and public transport see the complete guide to getting to Vallugola.

Where to park at Vallugola?

The car park is right next to the harbour and the beach and includes:

  • Paid spaces with a seasonal daily rate
  • Free spaces in limited numbers

In high season (July and August) the car park fills up in the central hours. The best times to find a spot:

  • Arrive by 9:30 in the morning
  • Arrive after 16:00 in the afternoon

In the other months availability is not generally an issue.
