The sandy beach on the Marche-Romagna border

The beach of Gabicce Mare marks the transition between the high coast of Monte San Bartolo and the Romagna Riviera. It is a fine golden sand beach about 1.5 kilometres long, directly continuous with the beach of Cattolica (separated from it by the Tavollo canal harbour).

Unlike the other beaches of the San Bartolo Park, here the features are the classic ones of the Romagna Riviera: fine sand, shallow seabeds, fifty lidos, full services. It has won the FEE Blue Flag and the Italian Paediatricians' Green Flag.

Beach with children

Family-friendly beach of Gabicce Mare

Gabicce Mare is one of the most family-friendly Italian beaches. The reasons:

  • Fine sand good for play
  • Shallow seabeds: under a metre for the first 20 metres from shore, under 2 metres up to 50 metres out
  • Breakwater barrier that softens the wave motion
  • Italian Paediatricians' Green Flag, a specific recognition for child-friendly beaches
  • Lifeguards at every lido
  • Play areas, baby clubs, entertainment at the main lidos

Particularly well-equipped lidos for families:

  • Bagni Zen Beach (Bagno 4): baby dance, kids' club
  • Bagni 32: dedicated baby park, play area

Dogs on the beach

At Gabicce Mare there are specifically pet-friendly lidos, with services dedicated to dogs: bowls, showers, equipped areas, umbrella. Admission depends on the policy of the individual lido; usually a health booklet is required and the basic rules (lead, picking up after the dog) apply.

On the free beach stretches, dogs on a lead are allowed in compliance with seasonal municipal rules.

The seafront and the harbour

The beach faces a pedestrian seafront on two levels: the main promenade at sea level, and an upper level continuing to Sottomonte. On the seafront there are cafés, ice-cream parlours, restaurants and shops.

To the north, the beach borders the Tavollo canal harbour, active for fishing and pleasure boating. The mobile pedestrian-cycle bridge over the Tavollo, opened in 2008, links Gabicce Mare to Cattolica: the crossing between the two beaches on foot is immediate.

To the south, the beach closes on the Monte San Bartolo promontory, where the climb begins towards Gabicce Monte and the park entrance.

When to go

Bathing season: from late May to late September, with optimal conditions between mid-June and mid-September. Water temperature from 21 °C in June up to 25-26 °C in the central months.

Best period for families: June and September, with pleasant temperatures, fewer people than in July-August and more favourable prices.

Sea breeze active in the central hours of the day, softening the higher temperatures of July and August (28-32 °C usual, up to 33-34 °C on hot days).

Storms: the breakwater reduces the impact of north-easterly swell. Days of sirocco and libeccio leave the bay calm.
