Vallugola Bay sits along the Strada Provinciale 44 Panoramica Adriatica, one of the busiest cycling routes in central Italy. The route links Pesaro and Gabicce Mare for 24 kilometres along the ridge of the Monte San Bartolo Park, with repeated elevation changes and head-on Adriatic views.

It suits both sports training and discovery cycle tourism, and has a settled cycling identity thanks to the Sunday closure to motor traffic in high season.

The Sunday traffic closure

From early June to late September, every Sunday morning from 6:00 to 12:30, the SP 44 Panoramica is closed to motor traffic and reserved for cyclists and pedestrians.

It is by far the best window for riding the route:

  • Clear carriageway, in full safety
  • Event atmosphere with groups, families, cycling clubs
  • Panoramic stops without traffic risk
  • Easier access to the bays of the Adriatic side

From 12:30 the road reopens to traffic. Sunday afternoon returns to normal.

The route: what to expect

The Panoramica is not a continuous climb but a sequence of repeated ascents and descents on the ridge. It is the cumulative total that makes the difference: over 24 kilometres you climb 600-700 metres in total.

The toughest gradients are found:

  • On the climb from Pesaro to the first ridge (4-6%, first 5 km)
  • On the climb to Fiorenzuola (up to 9% in places)
  • On the arrival at the Montagnola (196 m, the final ramp)

The surface is tarmac and generally well kept. There is no dedicated cycle path: during traffic hours, cyclists share the carriageway with vehicles and motorcyclists.

Vallugola along the route

Vallugola sits at around two-thirds of the route coming down from Pesaro towards Gabicce. The Strada della Vallugola is a side branch downhill: 900 metres, 150 metres of elevation.

The detour is worth it for two reasons:

Refuelling. The bars and restaurants of the harbour are the most recognisable stop on the route. It is particularly common on Sunday morning rides, when the Panoramica is closed.

Swimming. From May to September the bay lets you combine cycling and swimming. It is the park's beach most easily reached from the route.

The climb back from the bay to the Panoramica is short (900 m) but intense, with the steepest part in the first 500-600 metres. It calls for appropriate gearing.

E-bike: the Panoramica for everyone

The arrival of electric bikes has opened the Panoramica to a much wider public. With electric assistance, even riders without specific sports training can tackle the gradients and combine cycling with a visit to the ridge villages.

At Pesaro, Gabicce Mare and Cattolica several e-bike rental outlets operate, with models suited to the gradients of the SP 44 and generally including:

  • Helmet and accessories
  • Technical assistance
  • Guided tours along the Panoramica for those starting from scratch

Where to rent a bike

At Gabicce Mare, Cattolica and Pesaro there are rental outlets offering:

  • Classic bikes (city and hybrid) for urban and seafront routes
  • Mountain bikes for the park's gravel tracks
  • Road bikes for those tackling the Panoramica in sport mode
  • E-bikes for the gradients
  • Guided tours on the Panoramica and in the ridge villages
  • Luggage transfer for multi-day cycling holidays

Many lidos at Gabicce Mare also offer free bicycles to their guests.

Directly at Vallugola rental is not available: the typical starting point is Gabicce Mare (10-15 minutes' ride) or Pesaro.

The Bicipolitana of Pesaro

For those starting from Pesaro, access to the park goes via the Bicipolitana, the city's urban cycle lane network, organised in colour-coded lines on the metro map model, with over 180 kilometres of route.

The blue, yellow and green lines converge on the slopes of the park and link up with the SP 44 Panoramica.

When is the Panoramica closed to traffic?

From June to September, every Sunday from 6:00 to 12:30. During those hours the road is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians.

What is the total elevation of the Panoramica?

600-700 metres over the 24 km between Pesaro and Gabicce, spread across repeated climbs and descents. The highest point is 222 metres, near Casteldimezzo.

Is the Panoramica suitable for beginners?

On a standard bike, no. It calls for good fitness for the steepest climbs. On an e-bike, yes: electric assistance makes the route accessible even with modest fitness.

Can you rent bikes at Gabicce or Vallugola?

At Gabicce Mare there are rentals for classic bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. Some lidos give free bikes to guests. At Vallugola rental is not available, but the bay is reached from the Gabicce rentals in 10-15 minutes.

Can you combine cycling and swimming at Vallugola?

Yes. The combination works particularly well in May, June and September, when temperatures allow a swim and the beach is less crowded. Vallugola is the park's bay most easily accessible from the Panoramica route.

Is there a dedicated cycle lane?

No. On the SP 44 Panoramica cyclists share the carriageway with motor traffic, except during the Sunday closure. The Bicipolitana of Pesaro (over 180 km) is the dedicated urban cycle network in the area, linking to the SP 44.

Is the Panoramica busy with motorcyclists?

Yes, on weekends in high season it is busy with motorcyclists too. During the Sunday closure motorcyclists must use alternative routes.

How long does it take to ride the whole Panoramica?
