Vallugola and the area of the Monte San Bartolo Park offer within a few kilometres a combination of sea, theme parks, museums, walks and medieval villages hard to find on other Italian coastal areas.

The border position between the Marche and Romagna offers both the sheltered beach of Vallugola and the long sandy beach of Gabicce Mare, as well as the Cattolica Aquarium (the largest on the Adriatic) and the theme parks of the Romagna Riviera (Aquafan, Oltremare, Italia in Miniatura, Fiabilandia, Mirabilandia).

Vallugola with children: what to know

The beach of Vallugola is liked by families for the sheltered atmosphere, the nearby harbour services and the clarity of the water. Compared with the sandy beaches of the Riviera, though, it has specific features that call for attention.

Pebbles. The beach is of rounded pebbles. Reef shoes are essential for children, both on the shore and entering the water.

Seabed that drops fast. A few metres from the shore you reach 2-3 metres depth. For the youngest, arm bands or life rings and constant supervision are recommended.

Lido. The lido provides umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, services and in high season lifeguard cover. For families it is the most convenient choice compared with the free stretch. In July and August booking an umbrella is advised.

Snorkelling. The sides of the bay are suitable for a first try for children aged 6 and up, with mask and snorkel, always with an adult.

For very small children (0-4) or for a full day on the beach, the beach of Gabicce Mare is a more suitable choice. Vallugola can be kept for a half-day visit, combined with a walk on the harbour and lunch at the restaurants.

The beach of Gabicce Mare for families

4 km from Vallugola, the beach of Gabicce Mare is one of the best Italian beaches for families with children.

Recognitions:

  • FEE Blue Flag for water quality and services
  • Italian Paediatricians' Green Flag, a specific recognition for child-friendly beaches

Family-friendly features:

  • Fine golden sand, ideal for play
  • Shallow seabed that slopes gently (under a metre for the first 20 metres)
  • Breakwater barrier
  • Fifty lidos, many with play areas, baby clubs and entertainment
  • Lifeguards at all lidos
  • Free beaches alternating with lidos

Among the lidos best equipped for families: Bagni Zen Beach (Bagno 4) with baby dance and kids' club, Bagni 32 with baby park and play area.

Walks for families

The San Bartolo Park offers routes suited to children with a minimum of walking aptitude.

Path 151d (Panoramica-Vallugola harbour). 900 metres surfaced, 150 metres elevation downhill. Suited from age 5. The way back up calls for a few pauses.

Walkway on the Gabicce Monte belvedere. Short level stretches, accessible even with sturdy strollers.

Sentiero del Coppo (Camping Gabicce Monte-beach). 10 minutes down, 15 up, through woodland. From age 6-7 with trekking shoes.

Sunday morning on the Panoramica. From June to September the SP 44 is closed to traffic from 6 am to 12:30 pm: ideal for a family bike ride or walk.

For older children (10 and up) with a good walking aptitude, the short loops on paths 151 and 155 are doable, with elevation managed by stops.

The Cattolica Aquarium

The Cattolica Aquarium Le Navi is the area's main family attraction. It is the largest aquarium on the Adriatic and lies 4 km from Vallugola, reached by car in 10 minutes.

The aquarium is organised in four themed paths identified by colour:

  • Blue: sharks, jellyfish, penguins, stingrays (the largest)
  • Yellow: river habitats, otters, caimans
  • Green: reptiles and amphibians
  • Purple: insects with magnified specimens

Interactive experiences by booking: public feedings of sharks, otters and penguins at set times, behind-the-scenes tours, encounters with reptiles. For children 6-12 the "Marine Biologist for a Day" programme runs workshops, marine-biology summer camps and boat trips.

Riviera theme parks

A short distance away are some of Italy's main theme parks.

Park Location Distance Suited to
Aquafan Riccione 15 km Children from age 5 (height limits)
Oltremare Riccione 15 km All ages
Italia in Miniatura Rimini 30 km From age 4
Fiabilandia Rimini 25 km 3-10
Mirabilandia Ravenna 70 km All ages
Teatro dell'Aria Gradara 8 km All ages

Aquafan and Oltremare are open in the summer season (June-September). Italia in Miniatura, Fiabilandia, Mirabilandia follow variable seasonal calendars. Teatro dell'Aria is a falconry park with flight displays by birds of prey, an uncommon experience in Italy.

Gradara with children

The medieval village of Gradara, 8 km from Vallugola, is a destination very suited to families. The Rocca with its battlements gives an image of a castle particularly engaging for children, and the story of Paolo and Francesca can be told in a simplified version.

Activities planned for families:

  • Family guided tours of the fortress
  • Educational workshops during some events
  • Grotte di Gradara, system of 16 caves dug into the tuff. Striking from age 6 up
  • Bosco di Paolo e Francesca and Passeggiata degli Innamorati around the village
  • Annual events: Assedio al Castello (July, historical re-enactment), The Magic Castle (summer, fantasy festival), Castello di Natale (December)

Family museums

Museo della Regina, Cattolica. Archaeology section (Bronze Age, Roman) and ethnography section (Adriatic maritime culture, boats, fishing gear). The ethnography section is particularly engaging for children.

Sorbini Palaeontological Museum, Fiorenzuola di Focara. Messinian fossils of the San Bartolo cliff, including a fossil dragonfly that won a national prize. Suited from age 6 up with an interest in palaeontology.

Casa Rossini, Pesaro. Birthplace of Gioachino Rossini, national museum. Guided visit in 45 minutes.

Antiquarium of Colombarone. Finds from the late-Roman villa and the early-medieval basilica. Open at weekends, pairs well with a walk in the park.

Eating with the family

The restaurants of Vallugola harbour and the ridge villages are generally family-friendly, with simple children's menus on request. For specific needs (high chair, kids' menu, separate room) check in advance with the individual restaurant.

For more informal meals, on the harbour and the Gabicce Mare seafront there are bars, kiosks and pizzerias with pizza by the slice, focaccia, ice cream and quick dishes. For dinner, the restaurants of Gabicce Monte often offer more relaxed atmospheres for families, with outdoor tables in season.
