Vallugola Bay has three restaurants directly overlooking the harbour and the beach, complemented by a wider offering spread across the ridge villages of Monte San Bartolo, in particular at Gabicce Monte, Casteldimezzo and Pesaro. The cooking of the area is centred on fresh Adriatic fish, on the maritime tradition of the ridge villages and on the inland cooking of the Marche-Romagna hills, with pairings that reflect the border position between the two regions.

The bay's restaurants share some traits: proximity to the harbour, which feeds the fish supply directly; sea or bay views; and marked seasonality, with full operation in the months from April to October. Some are open all year, others follow the marina's seasonal calendar.

Restaurants in Vallugola Bay

Il Falco

The historic restaurant of the bay. Its origins go back to the 1950s, when the first owner, a fisherman, rebuilt on the site a small wooden hut received in payment for a catch of fish. The name evokes the raptors that nest in the rock face behind the venue. The cooking is dedicated to fresh Adriatic fish, with specialities that include the royal raw plateau, oysters with various agings, the shellfish vertical (langoustines, king prawns, red and pink prawns), the trio of tartares, the night's-catch grill Romagna-style, the grand catalana of shellfish (lobster, langoustines and king prawns), octopus cooked two ways and the Falco fry. The wine list favours whites from the area (Verdicchio, Bianchello del Metauro) and a selection of Italian wines to accompany the fish.

The cooking of the area

The cooking of the Vallugola area reflects its border position between the Marche and Romagna, and between the coast and the inland hills. Some of the most representative dishes:

Brodetto. The fish soup of the Adriatic tradition, made with mixed catch of the day, tomato, vinegar and aromatic accents. There are local variants with differences between the Marche and Romagna versions. It is the identifying dish of the area's seafaring cooking.

Night's catch. The fish brought in by the trawlers' night trips, served the following day in traditional recipes: chargrilled Romagna-style, in salt, in the oven, with tomato. The most common species include sea bass, shi drum, gilthead bream, monkfish, skate, gurnards, dogfish.

Shellfish and molluscs. King prawns, langoustines, red and pink prawns, oysters from the natural beds off Cattolica (Ostrea edulis), mussels, clams. Shellfish is often served raw as carpaccio, tartare or plateau, in line with a cooking school that values the freshness of the catch.

Fresh pasta. Local tradition, both Marche and Romagna, calls for fresh egg pasta (tagliolini, tagliatelle, passatelli, garganelli), often dressed with fish or shellfish sauces. Sardinian fregola appears on some menus as a modern variation for seafood dishes.

Montefeltro truffle. The inland hills, a short distance from the coast, are an area for the harvesting of truffle, which appears on some local menus accompanying pasta, eggs or meats.

Wines. The wines of the area include Bianchello del Metauro (Marche white from an autochthonous grape), Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Sangiovese delle Colline Pesaresi, and the DOC wines of Romagna (Sangiovese, Albana, Trebbiano). The most frequent pairings for fish dishes are Bianchello and Verdicchio.

Extra virgin olive oil. The San Bartolo area and the Adriatic side of the Marche produce quality extra virgin olive oil, often used directly in fish preparations.

How to book and practical tips

Booking. In high season (July and August) and at weekends in June and September, booking is recommended, particularly for the bay's restaurants, which have a limited number of covers. For Lunula Terra di Mare online booking is available via TheFork; for the others, contact by telephone directly.

Hours. The bay's restaurants generally keep extended hours: lunch from 12 to 3, dinner from 7 to 11. Some have a weekly closing day (Monday) and periods of seasonal closure.

Arrival by boat. For those reaching the bay by sea, it is worth informing the restaurant when booking, to coordinate mooring and table. Some restaurants make it easier for clients arriving by sea with dedicated services.

Parking. The harbour car parks are largely paid. In high season, occupancy is at saturation in the central hours of the day and on weekend evenings. Arriving in advance is advisable, or using the car parks along the SP 44 with access to the harbour on foot via path 151d.

Sunsets and panoramic dining. For those seeking the sunset experience, the restaurants of the village of Gabicce Monte generally offer the best perspective, with a frontal view inland. The bay's restaurants, set in the bowl of the cliff, have a more limited view of sunset but enjoy the natural shade of the cliff in the late afternoon, a quality appreciated in summer dining.
